Rygar the legendary adventure11/26/2022 ![]() ![]() Rygar recieves a weapon called Diskarmor from a mysterious, unseen being to vanquish the supernatural evil that has defeated Argus. ![]() But one fateful day, the princess is kidnapped by hideous fiends known as Titans, and the Kingdom of Argus is overrun and brought to ruination by monstrous creatures. Battle has just about completely consumed Rygar's memory (too many cracks on the head, I suppose), and he lives only to serve Argus's Princess Harmonia as a valorous gladiator. You are Rygar, the mightiest warrior of the ancient kingdom of Argus, a small island ruled by the powerful Roman Empire. Tecmo, not seeking to be elbowed out during this period of potential profit, revived Rygar for the Sony PlayStation 2, releasing Rygar: The Legendary Adventure in North America on November 27, 2002, and Argos no Senshi in Japan on Decemto legions of waiting fans. Contra, Shinobi, Ninja Gaiden, and many already established series attempting a " return to roots", as it were, are the soup du jour. Now, it's late 2002, and gamers seem to be clamoring for remakes, remakes, remakes. Nevertheless, Rygar gained a great cult following over the years its innovative free-roaming system, along with other ground-breaking gameplay mechanics (Rygar's Diskarmor, which we'll get to later, and the experience system, among others) earned it the respect it deserved among gamers. To the casual observer, it was just an average "beat on anything that moves" side-scroller in a sea of a great many others in the genre ( CastleVania, Contra and Mega Man tend to be the most remembered 2D action games of the period). The original game, made by Tecmo, saw ports to the Atari Lynx, the TurboGrafx 16, Sega Master System (in Japan only) and (most importantly) Nintendo's NES. Not many people remember the original Rygar, originally a Japanese arcade game called Argos no Senshi ( Knight of Argus). Taking all of these points into account, Varanini awarded the game a 7.3.Caution: Minor to medium spoilers. He also praised the game's ability to maintain a strict 60FPS despite the detail of the character models, which he noted helped the feel of the gameplay. Varanini did compliment the game's graphics and music, calling the former "absolutely beautiful" and the latter "excellent". GameSpot's Giancarlo Varanini gave the title a more mixed review, calling the story weak, complaining about the static camera and the lack of variety in enemies, but found it's ultimate problem to be the short length- stating that the package didn't offer enough compelling reasons to come back for replays or further content to unlock, and that the 4-5 hour runtime was insufficient. In his review for IGN, Douglass Perry claimed that the only drawback to the game was its short length, favorably praising the combat, graphics, and soundtracks, ultimately giving the title an 8.4, saying "Rygar makes up for its weaknesses by displaying an array of gameplay elements woven craftily together in a game that should make any action gamer happy." These opinions are largely mirrored by Eurogamer's own review, written by Martin Taylor, who compared the game to Capcom's then-recent Devil May Cry and while he criticized the camera for its pre-set angles making combat frustrating, the slow start combined with the short length, and described the story and performances as easily ignored guff, he was impressed with the gameplay and found it engaging throughout, awarding it an 8/10 score. Rygar received largely positive reviews on its original release, holding a Metacritic score of 83. ![]()
